A brief view of the lives of Jocelyne and Bobby Floyd


 

 

 

 

 

Bobby Lee Floyd, Born 08/12/1942, Cartersville, Georgia

 

Education:

1)      Bachelor Science Degree in Psychology with minors in Sociology and Biology

2)      Advanced studies York University (Toronto, Canada) in Management

3)      Three months intensive studies in French language at La Prairie, Quebec, Canada

4)      Six months of night courses at Woodrow Wilson Law School 

5)      Three months of courses at Southern Polytechnic State University 

 

                                  

I believe in God. I am now a liberal democrat and  environmentalist.

 

Accomplishments:

        

1)      Eagle Scout

2)      On my own since the age of 19

3)      Married and in love with same person for 43 years

4)      Supporting my wife while she finished College with a BA with honors at the age of 42

5)      Drafted US Army, basic training( Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.) was given the temporary rank of Corporal, in advanced training at Fort Bliss Texas (El Paso) was in charge of company and appointed to the temporary  rank of Staff Sergeant and also received the outstanding graduate award. Honorable discharges from the Army, Georgia Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserves with the rank of sergeant. Nine months service in Vietnam. Four days R and R in Toyko, Japan.

6)       Graduate at the age of 30 with the help of GI bill, Honor roll the complete senior year. Last quarter all A's; Started the psychology experimental lab at the university (rented building, hired students, bought animals and demonstrated to college students) Also while in university was the associate director of the student center (hired students to man information booth, my wife and I were responsible to entertain guest speakers in our student center apartment and provided accommodations (examples are Governor Jimmy Carter, US Senator Talmage, Governor Lester Maddox, Mr. Thigpen author Three Faces of Eve

7)      Was an inventory controller for the largest phone company in Canada, (1year)

8)      Started and was the General Director of sheltered workshop in Quebec, Canada (the only American citizen working for the Quebec government at the time) Staff of 6 full time instructors and social workers, worked in the French language. 50 mentally handicapped adults in training also had numerous volunteers. 7 years

9)      Organized, Started and Ran the first ever-special Olympics in Quebec (for 7 years).

10)  President of the admission board for the Montreal area for anyone placed in Institution or Workshops for the Mentally Handicapped, one year.

11)  Gave seminars on handicapped (mental retardation) at numerous educational facilities

12)  Regular guest on local Sunday morning Television Programming regarding management and dealing with any handicapped person.

13)  Organized, started and hired the staff of the first ever group home for the mentally retarded in Quebec.

14)  Vice president of the volunteer bureau in Beloeil , Quebec. 2 years

15)  Owner and manager of Centre Recreation Center(1 year), IRIS Inc (president) 3 years, Owner and manager of a property and casualty insurance agency 17 years.

16)  While in Sales I won numerous awards and won trips.  My wife and I and have traveled to Singapore, Taipei, Taiwan, Malaysia, Grenada, Margarita Island, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Aruba, Puerto Rico, Homestead, Bonaire, Tobago, Barbados, Bahamas, and Caracas, Venezuela.

17)  Prior to going to University, worked as an apprentice for Florida Power and Light Company (3 years), Pipeline Construction Co in Texas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Kansas worked as welder's helper, and bookkeeper- timekeeper (2 years)

18)  Bought a run down historic plantation 27 years ago and have personally restored it. The original plantation adjoins Patrick Henry's Long Island

19)  Placed 3rd in East Coast Windsurfing championship in 1992.

20)  Certified windsurfing instructor and the first year after selling my last business taught it at different shops in Avon, N.C., Wave, N.C., Ocean City, Md., and Rehoboth Beach, Del.

21)  I have half way complete writing my first book. The subject is historical construction. How to date items in historical homes. I have worked with a State Architectural Historian, Architectural historians and archeologists at Williamsburg, A retired Virginia Tech professor who is a specialist in Dendrochronology.( He had dated most of Williamsburg, Stratford Hall and 27 other well known historic sites in Virginia including my own), other local archeologist, contractors who specialize in old homes and dozens of other people who have tremendous knowledge in historical homes.

22)  Enjoy oil painting, sculpting, gardening, researching, my animals  (50 birds, 4 cats, 4 dogs) and blacksmithing (check this site out )

23)  Restored (myself) a classic MGB after attending classes at Vocational Tech School for that purpose

24)  Collector of antique forgotten tools and recently became involved in Blacksmithing.

25) I used to be(with varying degrees) an accomplished golfer, tennis player, mountain biker, rollerblader,diver,fisherman and windsurfer.

26) Other jobs that I had to take to survive in my younger days were: Newspaper route, janitor, lawn work, grocery store bagger, ladies shoe salesman, magazine salesman, Kirby vacucum salesman, shipping clerk, wash cars, service manager at car dealership, repaired photo copiers and desk clerk at hotel.

 

 Places that I have lived are: (White,Georgia); (Marietta, Georgia); (Dahlonega, Georgia); (Atlanta,Georgia); (Wetumpka, Alabama); (Houston, Texas); (Borger, Texas); (Booker, Texas); (El Paso, Texas); (Fort Leonard, Missouri); (York, Nebraska); (Sargent, Nebraska); (Scottsbluff, Nebraska); (Casper, Wyoming); (Bien Hoa,Vietnam); (Daytona Beach, Flordia), (Beloeil, Quebec, Canada); and (Long Island, Virginia).

 

Other people than above I have personally  met are the then Prime Minister of Quebec(Rene Levesque )and John Beliveau(Hall of Fame hockey player). Toured the exterior of Evis Presley's (Graceland) home in 1966 with his uncle who was a guard before it was open to the public. Attended the 1965 show of Bob Hope in Vietnam. Went numerous time to the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and observed the boxing /field and track events.  Met and observed  Mohamad Ali practice in the Bahamas. (1981)

     

Marie Therese "Jocelyne" Lefebvre Floyd, Born 08/14/1946, Shawinigan, Quebec, Canada

 

        Of Norman lineage on both maternal and paternal sides coming from Rouen, Normandy, France

        Religion: Catholic

 

Education:

1.      College St Maurice: Classical course, Quebec, Canada

2.      McGill University: Foreign languages (Spanish and German), Montreal, Canada

3.      Lynchburg College: Bachelor of Arts with honors, Virginia

 

     Accomplishments:

1.       Recipient of several awards in piano competitions and recitals under the direction of Paul Loyaunet (co-founder of Beethoven Institute in Paris)

2.      Returned to University after 22 years and was on the Dean's list for  two complete years, The Honor graduate in Languages.

3.      Wed my husband nine days after meeting him and still love him 38 years later.

4.      Supported my husband through all of his businesses, adventures and especially when he returned to school to get his Bachelor degree.

5.      Worked both in Georgia and Virginia while at universities as language assistant.

6.      Was honored to work at the Worlds Fair in Montreal in 1967 in Public Relations for Bell Canada.

7.      Was on committee and volunteer for many years for the Richelieu Valley Mental Retardation Association.

8.      Have a gift for languages. Completely bilingual (French/English) with knowledge of Spanish and some Japanese.

9.     Office manager for two different businesses for a total of ten years in the States.

10.  Sales manager of our own store in Canada for one year.

11.  Taught eighth grade French for Lynchburg city schools.

12.  Assisted in restoration of our Plantation (27 years)

13.  Adapted to the ways of "Southern living" with its eclectic culture.

14.  Work as Interpreter at Historic Plantation
